There are two basic rules to follow when applying eye shadow.
First:
The eyeball is naturally darker towards the outside than the inside. For a natural impression of depth, apply the darker color at the outer corners of the eye.
Second:
Blur the border between the eye shadow and neighboring skin for a natural gradation.
No matter how many colors you find in an eye shadow set, the colors are usually divided into three types – light, intermediate, and dark. These can be applied by following the basic procedure outlined below.
Light colors:
First, brighten up the eyes by applying the light color over the whole eyelid. If you want good coloration all round the eye, a thickish tip or brush will work best.
Intermediate colors:
Next, blend in the intermediate color working from the outer corners of the eyes inwards. The outer corners of the eyes tend to droop as we get older. For a youthful look, apply more color at the outermost corner the eye, carefully blending in the color to obscure the borders between the shades. Meanwhile, the inner corners of the eyes need only a light dab of color. This is important to remember, as color applied too heavily at the inner corner will look gaudy.
Dark colors:
Finally, apply dark color along the upper and lower lash lines, again applying more color at the outer corners and more lightly inward. If your upper eyelids tend to droop down over the eye shadow, try applying dark and intermediate colors over a wide area. The eyes will look larger and well balanced with dark color applied over the outer one third of your eye lid. Look in the mirror to make sure that the eye shadow is visible on the outer sides of the eyes with your eyes open.
If any of the eye shadow color on the upper eyelid leaks onto the lower eyelid, conceal this by applying the intermediate color on the outer side of the lower eyelid, as well.
Note: With a little practice, you will master the technique of eye shadow application much more easily than you expected. Once you are used to it, you can start working with more colors to compose new and beautiful makeup effects.
